The Fantasy Premier League (FPL) is a game in which participants create their teams consisting of actual players in the English Premier League (EPL) and get points based on their performance in the league. With the growing popularity of FPL, the gambling industry has found a new target audience; FPL players.

The online gambling industry has started advertising its services to FPL players, luring them in with free bets and enhanced odds. This has raised concerns about the introduction of gambling to a younger audience, as many FPL players are teenagers or young adults.

Experts believe that the gambling industry has specifically targeted FPL players due to the addictive nature of the game. FPL players are constantly monitoring their players’ performance and making transfers to maximize their points, leading to increased engagement in the game. With gambling now being introduced to the mix, players are more likely to start placing bets on their players, further feeding the addictive nature of the game.

Furthermore, promoting gambling to FPL players has raised ethical concerns, as it encourages young adults and teenagers to start gambling without fully understanding the risks and consequences. The gambling industry must take a responsible approach to this new market and consider the long-term effects on young people.

Fantasy Premier League Rules

If you’ve played before you will be aware of Fantasy Premier League but for anyone not familiar with it, you are given a £100m budget to pick a squad of 15 players for the upcoming Premier League season. In each round of games, you need to pick a starting 11 from these 15 players that you believe will score you the highest amount of points that round. You get more points the more goals, assists, and clean sheets your players get. If a player in your starting 11 does not play, a player from your bench will automatically be substituted in.

After each round, you are given the opportunity to transfer a player out for free, two if you do not use your free transfer from the round before. You can transfer out more than that in a round but you may be subject to a points deduction.

You also get two wildcards over the course of the season where you can transform your whole squad with no penalty points. As well as that you get one, “Free Hit”, which is where you can change your whole squad for one round only before your previous squad is brought back for the following round, “Bench Boost”, where the points your players that are sat on the bench get are included in your total score for that round and last of all you get a “Triple Captain”, an option where your captain for one particular round gets three times the amount of points they actually score in that round.

Each round you have a deadline in which you can submit your starting eleven, this is usually an hour before the first game of the round starts.
