According to a report from the Wall Street Journal (WSJ), Meta is in the process of developing a new and more powerful AI system.

Their goal is to create an AI model that matches the capabilities of OpenAI‘s most advanced system and surpasses their current open-source AI called ‘Llama 2.’

Llama 2, which was released in July and is available through Microsoft’s Azure cloud service, was designed as an alternative to OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Bard.

Why Does It Matter?

Since OpenAI introduced ChatGPT in November of last year, many companies have been trying to come up with even better generative AI systems. The Wall Street Journal reports that Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has put together a special team to speed up the development of GenAI.

Meta is developing a new and more powerful AI system, Says Wall Street Journal

This new big language model (LLM)-based system will undergo training later this year and is set to be launched in 2024. Meta’s upcoming AI model is expected to be a strong competitor in the global race for advanced AI. There are also rumors that Apple is working on products similar to ChatGPT and Bard.

Apple’s project, known as ‘Apple GPT,’ relies on their proprietary foundation called ‘Ajax’ for creating LLMs.

Additionally, Zuckerberg has mentioned that their AI tool will be open-source, which means that anyone can take a look at how it works and evaluate its algorithms.

Meta’s approach to open-source models has raised some questions in recent months. The Open Source Initiative (OSI), a non-profit organization dedicated to maintaining open-source software standards, has criticized another Meta project called Code Llama for not following typical open-source software licenses.
