Did you know Spotify is using a lot of money for podcasts where nobody talks. These special podcasts play calm sounds like rain and waves, and guess what?
Many people actually like them. A report says if Spotify does things differently, it could make an extra $38 million every year.
So, let’s stick around to learn more about these interesting white noise podcasts and how they’re changing Spotify’s plans.
What’s the Update?
Spotify is spending lots of money on podcasts where people don’t talk. A report from Bloomberg says if Spotify stops promoting these kinds of podcasts, it could make an extra $38 million each year.
These podcasts play soothing sounds like rain or waves on a loop. They’re more popular than you might think because Spotify’s computer program has been showing them to users. This program usually promotes podcasts with talking, not music.
Moreover, the people who make these “podcasts” earn money from the ads played during their episodes. A report last year said they could make around $18,000 a year from Spotify ads. According to internal documents, these types of podcasts were listened to for 3 million hours every day on Spotify in January 2023.
When Spotify realized it was showing users these podcasts, they thought about stopping it. They considered removing these shows, not allowing more, and suggesting other types of content. But this plan didn’t happen. A spokesperson for Spotify said they still have these podcasts because the plan didn’t work out. They didn’t respond to The Verge’s request for a comment.
Although Spotify says these podcasts are fine, things might change. Some podcasters noticed their episodes disappearing from Spotify, as reported by Bloomberg.
